Paper tapes use a crepe or kraft paper backing. Crepe paper stretches and conforms around curves, which suits masking during painting and coating; kraft paper is stronger and does not stretch, which suits carton sealing and reinforcement. Whether a tape removes without residue depends on the adhesive and on the temperature the tape has been exposed to.
